Protecting GG23 with Human Passport
Did you know that Human Passport (formerly Gitcoin Passport) is still playing a key role in Gitcoin Grants Round 23 (GG23)? We are continuing the fight against Sybil attacks, making sure matching funds are fairly allocated.
For GG23, Gitcoin powered its Sybil resistance strategy with two high-impact tools:
Human Passport’s Model-Based Detection: Leveraging Passport's best-in-class Sybil defense, Gitcoin is analyzing the onchain history of donors to prioritize unique individuals with proven activity across multiple chains.
Connection-Oriented Cluster Matching (COCM): This innovative method analyzes donation patterns to detect groups of users who donate to similar sets of projects. By reducing the influence of these patterns, we can better identify and mitigate the effects of Sybil attackers and airdrop farmers.
What do you need to do to have your donation matched? Nothing! Model-Based Detection checks your address’s history in the background, and doesn’t require you to have a Passport.
Although GG23 isn’t utilizing our Stamp-based verification, dozens of other projects and campaigns still rely on Passport’s Stamp-based verification to ensure their communities stay safe from Sybil attacks.
Gitcoin Stamp Clarification
Let’s chat about the Gitcoin Stamp.
We’ve been offering points for Gitcoin contributions for quite some time, and always receive questions around the time of their core rounds.
The Gitcoin Stamp awards points to all contributors to the core round projects who pass the Gitcoin Sybil defenses. You can see a full list of rounds included in the Gitcoin Stamp at the following link: Eligible Gitcoin rounds.
However, a very important detail:
We don’t add contributions from rounds until a few weeks after the round closes!
This delay provides Gitcoin the time they need to run their Sybil defense check so we don’t award points to bad actors.
This means that – if you make a contribution to the current round, GG23 – your points will be awarded in early May, once the round has closed and the Sybil defense checks have been completed.
No worries if you forget these details! We included all of this information within the Stamp description on the Passport app.
Product Launch: Passport Embed
Human Passport is 𝓮𝓿𝓸𝓵𝓿𝓲𝓷𝓰 – after the acquisition by human.tech in January 2025, we’re excited to share a new product sneak peek:
Passport Embeds
Passport Embed is an embeddable component, similar to CAPTCHA, that lets you verify your humanity directly inside a partner app or website. No redirects. No extra steps. No hassle.
Embed checks your wallet for existing Stamps and, if needed, guides you through verification with additional Stamps like KYC, biometrics, or socials.
We are currently running alpha testing of Passport Embeds with selected partners. You can check out the Embed demo page and reach out to the Passport team if you’re interested in testing the Embed product early.
Thanks for helping make web3 safer and fairer for real humans! The Sybils aren’t slowing down, and neither are we.
